Executive Function Workshop at IHM School

On March 3rd we worked with sixth-eighth graders at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Scarsdale, NY. What an incredibly beautiful school! The space, the people, the students were all so warm and kind. We felt such positive energy as soon as we walked in. Tracy, the school principal, is amazing! You can tell she really cares about her faculty and her students so much. We had worked with Tracy prior to get to know what the students needed from us. Together we decided that our Executive Function workshop was the best fit.

Executive Function is a set of mental skills that encompass working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control as well as self-awareness. The IHM middle schoolers dove deep into the hands-on activities we had planned that focused on planning, organization, time management skills with an emphasis on building focus, following directions, and understanding their feelings.

As a follow-up to our at the IHM School, we held a zoom for their middle school parents to discuss all things Executive Functioning and shed light on what their children learned with us. Our conversation focused on defining Executive Function and highlighting its importance for adolescents.

We provided specific strategies to the parents in order to help them support their students with:

  • Prioritization, planning & task initiation

  • Time management

  • Working memory

  • Organization

  • Managing Emotions

We truly believe that raising curious, bright, and thoughtful middle-schoolers takes a village, and so partnering with the IHM faculty as well as their parents was so meaningful. If you'd like to learn more about our workshops for parents click here.

We had a wonderful time working with these middle schoolers, faculty and parents. We are looking forward to coming back to IHM in April!
